The year 2019 marked the centennial of the first landscape architect and recreation professional hired to work for the US Forest Service, Arthur Carhart. Through direct training, experience, and exposure, RAs gain the tools to launch their natural and cultural resource careers. Resource Assistants (RAs) work with Forest Service staff to complete mission-critical work that demonstrates leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication. The Resource Assistant Program is a rigorous and immersive paid internship for individuals interested in Forest Service careers. Also within the Umpqua is the Diamond Lake Recreation Composite, one of the largest developed recreational facilities within the Forest Service. Included within the Forest are the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River, a portion of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, three wildernesses, the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area, and a very large hydropower project. The Umpqua produces a wealth of water resources, timber, wildlife, fish, minerals, and outdoor recreation opportunities. The Forest encompasses a diverse area of sparkling rivers and lakes, deep canyons, and rugged mountains up to 9,184 feet in elevation. The Umpqua National Forest covers nearly one million acres along the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Southwest Oregon.
